What does car insurance cover?

Car insurance policies and the cover offered varies by company. However, the following are some general guidelines on coverage offered:

1. Car Damage Coverage: provides cover for damages to your car caused by collisions or accidents, natural or man made calamities like fire, flood, storm, riots & strikes, theft. Different covers / packages are offered by most insurance companies and you can select the package depending on your choice or requirement. A Comprehensive Cover generally includes accidents by collision with utility poles, guard-rails, missed garage parking, other objects, hit & run, falling objects, fire & explosion, theft, vandalism, collision with other vehicles, natural calamities such as flood, storm, inundation, typhoon, lightening etc.
2. Bodily Injury Indemnity Coverage: provides accident cover for you and passenger including your family. Personal accident cover generally covers loss of life, limbs, eye and permanent disability due to injuries our of an accident. It also covers benefits to passengers (including drivers) for death & bodily injury, usually upto a certain maximum amount.
3. Bodily Injury & Property Liability Coverage: provides damages that you are legally liable for bodily injury to any person in a car or pedestrians arising out of the insured car’s accidents. The Property Damage Liability Coverage covers damages you are legally liable for property damage to other cars or another’s property.
4. On-Road Emergency Services Coverage: increasingly being offered by Insurance companies to cover emergencies that happen while on the road. Such plans usually cover urgent repairs, towing, removal & storage of vehicle, alternative transportation (e.g. Taxi), charging & starting problems, key services, tyre repairs (e.g. puncture), accommodation expenses, onward & return travel and medical expenses.
